Brand GRECERELLE

A cheap, easy summer dress that mostly does the job

I bought the GRECERELLE Womens Summer Maxi Dress in the 01 Polka Dots navy blue, size M, mainly for holidays and a couple of casual summer parties. I’m around a UK 12 on top and 12–14 on the bottom, about 5'5" (165 cm), so I went with the size guide that says M = UK 12–14. I’ve worn it a few times now: one barbecue, one evening out, and a few tries at home to see how it behaves, how it sits after washing, and if it’s actually practical or just looks nice on the hanger.

The first impression when I pulled it out of the bag was: it’s light, it’s thin, and it looks exactly like the photos in terms of colour and pattern. No nasty surprises there. The navy is a true navy, not that washed-out blue you sometimes get, and the white polka dots are regular and clean. The cut is that fake-wrap style: it looks like a wrap dress, but you’re not actually wrapping it around yourself, which for me is a good thing because real wrap dresses tend to open up when you sit down or if it’s windy.

After wearing it for a few hours, the main thing I noticed is that it’s very easy to wear. You slip it on, tie the belt, and you’re done. No zips, no buttons, no complicated straps. It’s basically a pull-on dress with a v-neck and an elastic waist. The fabric is stretchy enough so you don’t feel squeezed, but not so stretchy that it feels like a jersey nightgown. It sits somewhere between casual beach dress and slightly dressy summer outfit, depending on the shoes and accessories.

It’s not perfect, though. The material is on the thin side, the finish is what I’d call “fast fashion decent”, and if you’re picky about seams and hems, you’ll notice some small flaws. But for the price and the use I had in mind (holidays, casual events, nothing too formal), it’s a pretty solid option. If you expect a high-end, heavy, structured dress, this isn’t it. If you want something light, comfortable and easy to throw on, it’s worth considering.

Value for money: good everyday piece if your expectations are realistic

★★★★★ ★★★★★

In terms of value, this dress sits in that sweet spot where you’re not paying a fortune, but you’re also not getting total rubbish. For the price bracket it’s in (usually fairly affordable on Amazon, often with deals), you get a dress that is comfortable, versatile, and looks pretty close to the photos. The Amazon rating around 4.1/5 with a lot of reviews matches my feeling: most people will be happy enough, a few will be disappointed by thin fabric or small defects.

What I liked is that you can use it for several situations without overthinking it. With flat sandals and a simple bag, it works for casual daytime – beaches, holidays, walks in town. Swap to heels and a nicer bag, and it passes for a simple guest outfit at a laid-back wedding or an evening out. You’re not getting high-end tailoring, but you’re getting a dress that doesn’t look cheap from a distance, especially in the darker colours like this navy polka dot. It’s also a good option if you need something quickly – shipping is usually fast and sizing is fairly forgiving.

On the downside, there are some compromises for the price: fabric is thin, finish is basic, and quality control is a bit hit or miss (like the person who received no belt). If you’re very demanding about seams, alignment of prints, and long-term durability, you’ll probably find it a bit meh. For roughly the same budget, you might find more robust cotton dresses in sales, but they usually won’t have the same flowy, fake-wrap style.

For me, the dress sits in the “good value if you know what you’re buying” category. It’s not a bargain miracle, but it’s not overpriced either. If you need a comfortable summer dress that you won’t cry over if it gets a stain on holiday, it’s a sensible buy. If you want something you’ll wear for years and that looks premium up close, you should probably look elsewhere or be ready to spend more.

Design: fake wrap look, high-low hem, and some small quirks

★★★★★ ★★★★★

The design is clearly focused on being flattering on a lot of body types without needing much adjustment. You’ve got a cross v-neck that gives that wrap look without the stress of it opening, an elastic high waist, and a skirt with an irregular high-low hem and ruffles. On me, this combo works quite well: it defines the waist, hides the stomach and hips, and the ruffle and overlap at the front give some movement when you walk. It’s the kind of cut that can handle a bit of weight fluctuation without making you feel squeezed or baggy.

The top section is simple: short sleeves (almost like a loose t-shirt sleeve), v-neck that’s not too deep on a medium bust, and no buttons or zips. The neckline is the one area where people will have different opinions. On me, it’s fine for daytime with a normal bra, but if I lean forward a lot, there’s a bit of gaping. Nothing crazy, but if you work in a conservative place or bend down a lot, you might want a small pin or a cami. That’s pretty standard with this sort of fake wrap design, though, not specific to this dress only.

The skirt has that wrap effect, but it’s stitched, so it doesn’t fly open. The asymmetrical hem is actually quite practical: the front is high enough so you don’t trip over it when walking or climbing stairs, and the back keeps that maxi look. When I walked around on a slightly windy day, I didn’t have any “Marilyn Monroe” moments, which is a relief. The ruffle is not huge, but it adds a bit of volume and helps the skirt fall nicely instead of sticking to the legs.

On the downside, you can tell the pattern placement and ruffle finish are done with speed in mind. The dots don’t always line up perfectly at the seams, and the ruffle edge is a simple finish, not a fancy one. It doesn’t ruin the look, but if you’re the type who notices misaligned prints, you’ll see it. Also, the belt is just a long strip of the same fabric, no structure, no loops on the dress to hold it in place. It does the job, but it’s basic. Overall, the design idea is good and quite forgiving, but the execution is typical of a mass-produced dress.

Comfort: where this dress actually shines

★★★★★ ★★★★★

Comfort is probably the strongest point of this dress. The combination of stretchy rayon and the elastic waist means you don’t feel trapped in it at any moment. I wore it for a full afternoon and evening – about seven hours total – and never felt the urge to take it off as soon as I got home, which is usually a good sign. Sitting, walking, getting in and out of the car, going up stairs: nothing pulled weirdly, and the skirt never got in the way thanks to the high-low hem.

The elastic waist is tight enough to define the waist, but not so tight that it digs in and leaves marks. On my body (UK 12–14, size M), I could easily eat a full meal without feeling squeezed. The belt helps to hide the elastic and lets you adjust how much you want to cinch it. The v-neck sits flat enough that it doesn’t scratch or rub, and the short sleeves are loose, so they don’t cut into the arms. If you usually hate cap sleeves because they’re tight, these are a bit more forgiving.

In warm weather, the light fabric is a plus. I wore it on a slightly humid day and didn’t feel like I was wrapped in plastic, which sometimes happens with cheaper polyester dresses. Here, the rayon mix breathes reasonably well. The only thing I noticed is that, because the fabric is thin, if you sweat a lot in one spot, there’s a chance of seeing a bit of a mark, especially on the back. It’s not terrible, but if you’re very self-conscious about that, keep it in mind. I personally didn’t have big sweat patches, but I could see how it might happen on a very hot day.

One small downside: the neckline. If you move around a lot or bend over, you might find yourself adjusting it from time to time, especially if you’re busty or if your bra doesn’t sit flat. It’s not a disaster, but it’s the one area where I did a little tug now and then. Overall, though, for everyday comfort – walking, sitting, eating, dancing a bit – it’s pretty solid. It feels more like wearing a soft t-shirt and a flowy skirt than a structured dress.

Materials: light, stretchy, and definitely on the thin side

★★★★★ ★★★★★

The dress is made from 95% rayon (viscose) and 5% elastane/spandex, which is a pretty common mix for cheap to mid-range summer dresses on Amazon. In practice, that means the fabric is soft to the touch, has a nice drape, and a medium level of stretch. When you first put it on, it feels quite comfortable on the skin – no scratchy feeling, no stiffness. It’s also lightweight, so it’s good for warm weather, but that comes with a trade-off: it’s not the most forgiving in terms of opacity and it can show lumps and bumps a bit if you’re self-conscious about that.

On the body, the fabric has a flowy effect, especially in the skirt. When you walk, it moves nicely and doesn’t cling too much, except maybe a bit around the hips if you’re wearing it on a hot day and you’re sweaty. I wore it once without any special underwear and once with seamless shorts underneath, and I definitely preferred the second option. Not because the dress is see-through – the navy helps – but because the fabric is still thin enough that you can see the outline of thicker underwear. If you stand in direct sunlight with your back to the sun, you might see a bit of transparency on lighter colours; on this navy polka dot, it’s not dramatic but I wouldn’t wear bright-coloured underwear.

In terms of breathability, rayon is usually decent, and that’s the case here. I wore it during an evening that went from about 22°C down to 18°C, and I never felt overheated or sticky. At the same time, don’t expect it to keep you warm in cooler weather – it’s very much a spring/summer fabric. Compared to heavier cotton or linen dresses I own, this one feels lighter and more “floaty”, but also less robust. If you’re rough with your clothes, I wouldn’t tug too hard on the seams or belt loops (well, there are no loops, just the belt itself).

Overall, the material is decent for the price: soft, comfortable, but clearly not premium. It’s the kind of fabric that works well for holidays, casual outings, and maybe as a guest at a relaxed summer wedding, but I wouldn’t use it as a dress for very formal events or for work in a strict office. If you accept that it’s thin and treat it like a light summer piece, it does the job fine.

Durability and washing: decent so far, but clearly fast fashion

★★★★★ ★★★★★

I’ve washed the dress a couple of times now, both times in the machine at 30°C, inside out, with similar colours, and then let it air dry on a hanger. So far, it hasn’t shrunk or twisted, and the colour hasn’t bled. The navy is still navy, the white dots are still white. The fabric does come out of the machine a bit wrinkled, especially at the ruffles and hem, so if you want it to look neat, you’ll need to either iron it on a low setting or use a steamer. One reviewer mentioned it “needs a good ironing”, and I agree – you can wear it straight out of the wash if you don’t care about wrinkles, but it looks better with a quick pass of the iron.

On the stitching side, it’s okay but not perfect. I checked the seams around the waist and the armholes, and there were a few loose threads, nothing dramatic, but you can see it’s not top-tier workmanship. After a few wears, I haven’t seen any seams coming apart, but I wouldn’t pull hard on the ruffle or belt. The belt especially feels like something that could stretch out or fray over time because it’s just a strip of the same fabric, no reinforcement.

Because the fabric is thin and lightweight, I wouldn’t count on this dress lasting for years of heavy use. It feels like the type of piece you wear a lot for a couple of summers and then it might start looking tired. The hemline is narrow and not heavily reinforced, so if you’re clumsy and step on it often, expect some stress at the seams. Also, rayon can sometimes pill or show wear if it rubs against bags or rough surfaces; I haven’t seen pilling yet, but it’s early days.

Overall, in terms of durability, I’d call it acceptable for the price but nothing more. It’s not falling apart out of the box, but it’s clearly not built like a high-end dress either. If you take normal care – gentle wash, no dryer, don’t yank on it – it should easily get you through several seasons of occasional wear. Just don’t expect it to be a long-term wardrobe staple you’ll still wear in five years.

What you actually get out of the bag

★★★★★ ★★★★★

Out of the package, the dress comes folded into a basic plastic bag, no fancy extras. When you unfold it, you get a maxi length dress with a high-low hem (shorter at the front, longer at the back), short sleeves, a v-neck, and a separate belt in the same fabric. Mine did arrive with the belt, but I’ve seen at least one review mention a missing belt, so that’s clearly a quality control issue they haven’t fully nailed. The dress is marketed as a wrap dress, but to be clear: the skirt is sewn shut, it just has that wrap look with the overlap and ruffle.

The navy polka dot version looks quite classic. It’s not loud, not too busy, and the dots are a nice size – not tiny and not giant. The silhouette is regular fit, slightly fitted at the waist with elastic and then loose and flowy over the hips. On my 5'5" frame, the back hem hits around the ankle and the front shows the lower part of the calf, so it works with both flat sandals and low heels. It’s labelled as a maxi, but on me it’s more of a long midi / maxi mix because of the high-low cut.

In terms of sizing, the brand’s guide is: M = UK 12–14 / US 8–10, and I’d say that’s fairly accurate. On me, the top isn’t gaping, the waist isn’t digging in, and I still have room to move and sit comfortably. If you’re between sizes and prefer a looser fit, I’d still say stick to your usual, because the fabric has medium stretch and the cut is forgiving. The bust area has enough room for a regular bra without it peeking out too much, but if you’re very busty, you might need a small safety pin at the neckline to feel fully covered.

Overall, the presentation is what you’d expect from a mid-range Amazon dress: simple packaging, dress looks like the photos, and the style is easy to understand. No surprises, but also nothing fancy. It feels like a product made for volume sales, not a boutique piece, and that matches the price and Amazon ranking (it’s pretty high in women’s casual dresses). If you go in with that mindset, the presentation is totally fine.

Pros

  • Comfortable, soft, and lightweight fabric that’s easy to wear in warm weather
  • Flattering fake-wrap design with elastic waist and high-low hem that suits many body types
  • Versatile style that works for casual days, holidays, and relaxed parties or weddings

Cons

  • Fabric is quite thin and can show underwear lines or small sweat marks
  • Finish and stitching are basic, with some loose threads and variable quality control (e.g., missing belt reported by some buyers)

Conclusion

Overall, the GRECERELLE Womens Summer Maxi Dress in navy polka dot is a solid, no-frills summer dress that does what it says. The cut is flattering on a lot of body types thanks to the fake wrap look, elastic waist, and high-low hem. The fabric is soft and comfortable, but clearly on the thin side, and the finish is what I’d call average fast fashion. It’s the kind of dress you throw on for holidays, barbecues, casual parties, and maybe the odd relaxed wedding, without stressing too much about it.

If you’re after comfort, ease of wear, and a style that can go from day to evening with just a change of shoes, it’s a good option for the price. The main things to keep in mind: it’s not super thick, it may need a quick iron or steam after washing, and the quality control isn’t perfect (loose threads, occasional missing belt according to some buyers). If you’re picky about fabric weight and stitching, or you want a dress that feels premium and long-lasting, you’ll probably find it a bit basic.

In short: good value for a light, comfy, versatile summer dress, as long as you treat it as what it is – an affordable, mass-produced piece, not a long-term investment. Great for holidays and casual wear; less ideal if you’re hunting for something very polished or structured.
